13 Green Flags to Look for in a Strength Coach
Finding a personal trainer or strength coach isn't always easy, and it's a real investment of your time, your trust and your money. I've talked to enough women (and remember enough of my own early questions) to know how easy it is to end up with someone who hands you a plan without ever really getting to know you, your body or what you're working toward.
So I've put together the green flags I personally look for, and the ones I hold myself and my team to, so you know exactly what "good" looks like before you commit.
They Listen Before They Program Anything
A green flag coach asks the right questions before ever handing you a plan. They ask about your goals, your health history, your preferences and your current circumstances. They spend more time listening than talking, because they really want to understand where you're starting from, not just where you say you want to end up.
2. They Make You Feel Safe, Not Judged
There's nothing wrong with a coach who knows how to push you when that's the motivation you need. But you should never feel judged for where you're at, or intimidated to the point where you can't be honest about your setbacks or your capabilities. And you should never feel pressured into anything you're not comfortable with. Feeling safe enough to be honest is what makes progress possible.
3. Your Program Is Built for You, Not Copy-Pasted
A green flag coach isn't running the same plan for every single client. You have different capabilities, limitations and goals than the next person, and that deserves a program built around exactly where you're at rather that a template with your name typed in at the top.
4. They Communicate Like a Real Human
No one wants to be ghosted by their coach. A good one tells you what's next, explains any changes and makes sure you always know what to expect inside your program. And just as importantly, they follow through on what they say and expect the same honesty from you, instead of just telling you what you want to hear.
5. They Can Tell You the "Why"
If your coach is umming and ahhing about what you're doing that day, it's hard to feel confident in the workout. A green flag coach has your plan mapped out and can explain why you're doing those specific movements, reps and sets - especially when something's being modified for your body. You deserve to understand the reasoning, not just follow blindly.
6. They Track Your Progress and Adjust With You
If there's a movement you're struggling with, your coach should know about it and know how to adjust your programming so you keep moving forward. They should also be pushing you to keep adding load as you build strength, not letting you plateau out of comfort.
7. They Know Progress Isn't a Straight Line
There will be setbacks in your training and in your life, and a green flag coach never makes you feel like you've failed or let them down because of it. Instead, they help you keep showing up for your commitments, with empathy, even through the harder stretches.
8. Feedback Feels Like Support, Not a Gut Punch
Feedback is a huge part of coaching, and we all have a learning curve when we're trying something new. The difference is whether that feedback comes wrapped in encouragement to keep going, or leaves you feeling embarrassed and small. It should always be the former.
9. They Flex With Your Life, Not Against It
You and I both know there's weeks where you're pumped, fired up and ready to crush your workout. Then there's weeks where you'd much rather be curled up on your couch with your favourite snack. A green flag coach gets that especially as women, our capacity isn't the same every single week, and adapts your plan around your energy, injuries, schedule and changing goals instead of expecting you to just push through regardless.
10. They Welcome Your Questions
Your coach is not your drill sergeant. You're allowed to be curious and ask why you're doing something. It shows you care about your training, and when they take the time to answer and guide you, it shows they care too.
11. They Respect the Line Between Coach and Friend
Yes, your relationship with your coach can (and often does) grow close. Working on your health with someone feels personal, because it is. But a green flag coach never oversteps that boundary or takes advantage of the trust you've built together.
12. They Celebrate More Than the Number on the Scale
Sure, physical changes can be fun to track but a green flag coach celebrates getting stronger, having more confidence, showing up consistently, having more energy and feeling more capable in your everyday life. Because at the end of the day, this has always been about strong over skinny - about what your body can do, not just what it looks like.
13. They Never Stop Learning and They Know When to Refer Out
A great coach keeps growing in their field, and knows exactly when something falls outside their scope and it's time to send you to another professional instead of pushing you through it anyway. They're not trying to be everything to you, just the right person for what they're actually equipped to help with.
The perfect coach doesn't exist. But these green flags will help you find one who's genuinely equipped to walk alongside you on your strength journey. Someone who trains you for life, not for punishment. They're also the exact standards I hold my own assistant coaches to, so however you end up working with me inside The Strength Space, you're getting the same care and the same values from everyone.
